Leading By Light

Reshaping an Old House into a Tranquil Haven

This old house was emptied for 3 years, and after being restructured and renovated, it became a marriage present from a mother to daughter. The interior presents a concept of simple life, with lights running through and filling the whole place, bringing a new life to the 20-year-old house.

The old house, now known as "Leading By Light," has undergone a remarkable transformation under the skilled hands of designer Feng-An Lin. By utilizing an open style and incorporating full-height windows and glass partitions, the space has been infused with natural light, creating a transparent and spacious view in the common areas. The result is a warm and inviting residential space that exudes a sense of tranquility.

What sets "Leading By Light" apart from other designs is its ability to seamlessly blend old and new elements. The house has been given a new face through slight restructuring, while still retaining its original charm. The use of glass, wood brick, iron, and brick walls creates a layered space that showcases the designer's unique aesthetic. Feng-An Lin believes that every aspect of daily life contributes to the overall aesthetic, and this is reflected in the careful arrangement of materials, colors, light sources, and lines.

The indoor space spans approximately 151 square feet, providing ample room for residents to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. To ensure the longevity of the design, the project involved restructuring and improving the waterproof system, structure, and basic infrastructure. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that the space not only looks beautiful but also functions seamlessly.

Throughout the design process, Feng-An Lin conducted extensive research to address the challenge of lighting. By utilizing a white color scheme as the background and incorporating wood-tone materials for displays and furniture, the space achieves a harmonious balance. The open living space, dining area, kitchen, and study room are seamlessly connected, creating an interior that feels unrestrained and generous.

One of the notable design challenges overcome in "Leading By Light" was the ceiling above the dining area. To alleviate any feelings of oppression, a veneer-wrapped beam was incorporated into the design. Additionally, a long table with a wooden tabletop was chosen for the dining room, enhancing the warm and cozy ambiance during meals.

The project, which took place in Taiwan, commenced in July 2018 and was completed in March 2019. The result is a stunning residential space that not only pays homage to the past but also embraces the beauty of simplicity and natural light.

"Leading By Light" has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
